Indian Mathematicians-Augustus De Morgan

Augustus De Morgan Born: 27 June 1806 in Madura, Madras Presidency, India (now Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India)Died: 18 March 1871 in London, England

Ancient Indian mathematicians-Bhaskara I

Bhaskara I Born:  about 600 in (possibly) Saurastra (modern Gujarat state), India Died:  about 680 in (possibly) Asmaka, India We have very little information about  Bhaskara I 's life except what can be deduced from his writings. Shukla deduces from the fact that Bhaskara I often refers to the  Asmakatantra  instead of the  Aryabhatiya   Ⓣ  that he must have been working in a school of mathematicians in Asmaka which

Ancient Indian mathematicians-Brahmagupta

Brahmagupta Born:  598 in (possibly) Ujjain, India Died:  670 in India                       Brahmagupta,  whose father was Jisnugupta, wrote important works on mathematics and astronomy. In particular he wrote  Brahmasphutasiddhanta   Ⓣ , in 628. The work was written in 25 chapters and Brahmagupta tells us in the text that he wrote it at Bhillamala which today is the city of Bhinmal. This was the capital of the lands ruled by the Gurjara dynasty.

Ancient Indian mathematicians-Aryabhata

Aryabhata Born:  476 in Kusumapura (now Patna), India Died:  550 in India Aryabhata  is also known as  Aryabhata I  to distinguish him from the later mathematician of the same name who lived about 400 years later.  Al-Biruni has not helped in understanding Aryabhata's life, for he seemed to believe that there were two different mathematicians called Aryabhata living at the same time. He therefore created a confusion of two different Aryabhatas which was not clarified until 1926 when B Datta showed that  al-Biruni 's two Aryabhatas were one and the same person.

Decimal numeration and the place-value system

Decimal numeration and the place-value system I have already mentioned on several occasions the development of a decimal place value system of numeration and there is now very little doubt among historians that this invention originated from the Indian subcontinent. That said, it was considered, until recently, that Arabic scholars were responsible for the system, as C Srinivasiengar writes:

Mathematics in the service of religion

Mathematics in the service of religion:  I. Vedas and Vedangas The Vedic religion was followed by the Indo-Aryan peoples, who originated from the north of the sub-continent. It is through the works of Vedic religion that we gain the first literary evidence of Indian culture and hence mathematics. Written in Vedic Sanskrit the Vedic works, Vedas and

Indian Mathematicians

Indian Mathematicians It is without doubt that mathematics today owes a huge debt to the outstanding contributions made by Indian mathematicians over many hundreds of years. What is quite surprising is that there has been a reluctance to recognise this and one has to conclude that many famous historians of mathematics found what they expected to find, or perhaps even what they hoped to find, rather than to realise what was so clear in front of them.

Ancient Indian mathematicians-Baudhayana

Baudhayana about 800 BC - about 740 BC To write a biography of  Baudhayana  is essentially impossible since nothing is known of him except that he was the author of one of the earliest Sulbasutras. We do not know his dates accurately enough to even guess at a life span for him, which is why we have given the same approximate birth year as death year.
