The importance of teaching and learning of mathematics today one of the greatest challenges to a mathematics teacher is teaching mathematics to children who are slow learners. Slow learners are considered to be those children who are of limited intelligence with any or a combination of identifiable dysfunctionalties like attention deficit disorders (ADD), dyscalculia, dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyspraxia, dysnomia, hyperactivity or other related problems.
Slow learners are being characterized as functioning at ability significantly below grade level and consistently scoring low on achievement level. Most mathematics teachers have little or no consideration about the needs of slow learners in mathematics classrooms.
As part of the means to improve the achievement level of slow learners through new innovative technologies there is not enough time using face to face learning to ensure that these concepts are attained in order to write a high stake examination. It is therefore essential to have such students engaged in diverse processes of constructing their own concept representations. Teachers are encouraged to prepare students to visualize concepts and use new innovative technologies during their study time. It is hoped that with this new technologies and approach to learning that mathematical instruction would be transformed and that as students and teachers move towards a fresh and innovative paradigm shift, students will truly be responsible for their own learning and teachers can act as facilitators and motivational specialist. This paper discuses the definition of slow learners, basic causes of slow learning, identifiable characteristics of slow learners and suggests the use of new innovative technologies and strategies that could best to be used in teaching slow learners. The paper recommends mathematics teachers to use new innovative technologies and strategies in hybrid learning appropriately when teaching mathematics to slow learners.
